Carll leads Hayashi in
AT&T tournament

Kevin Carll maintained his two-shot lead over Kevin Hayashi during yesterday's second round of the Aloha Section PGA AT&T Stroke Play Championship played on the Big Island's Mauna Kea golf course.

Carll followed up his opening round of 69 with a 73 for a two-day total of 142.

Hayashi also shot a second-round 73 for a total of 144. Ron Castillo Jr. and Brendan Moynahan remained in contention as well at 145.

Moynahan shot a tournament-best 68 yesterday after opening with a 77.

Rodney Acia leads the senior division with a 147. Honolulu's Larry Stubblefield and Dennis Rose are another shot back at 148.

Souza wins OJGA match play championship

Chris Souza captured the 15-17 boys division of the Oahu Junior Golf Association annual match play event yesterday by defeating Jon Ozaki, 2-up, at the Olomana Links.

Xyra Suyetsugu won the 15-17 girls by default. The winner for the 13-14 boys was Corey Bartlett, who knocked off Arnold Sano, 1-up. Tiffany Takao defeated Mari Chun, 1-up to capture the 13-14 girls title.

Hawaii Twisters join national celebration

The Hawaii Twisters will take part in a national celebration of gymnastics by holding a free exhibition at the Windward Mall in Kaneohe on Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.

The event will be an opportunity to introduce the most successful coaches and gymnasts from around the islands. For more information, call 235-4487.

Waianae Blastaz place ninth in Spokane

The Waianae Blastaz finished ninth out of 48 teams in the ASA Junior Olympic Fastpitch 14-under National Championships held this week at Spokane, Wash.

The national championship was won by the Vista All-Stars of Southern California, a team Waianae didn't face. The Blastaz lost two games in the double-elimination event. Los Alamitos All-Stars handed Waianae its first loss, 4-3. BV All Stars of San Diego, which finished fourth overall, eliminated Waianae, 8-4.

Wie takes lead in HSWGA stroke play event

Michelle Wie continued her strong play in local summer events by taking the first-round lead of the HSWGA Stroke Play Championship at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Her 73 was one shot better than Kathy Tsukada and two better than state prep champion Rachel Kyono and Merynn Ito, who shot 75.

Ewa blanks Utah, 5-0, in Little League tourney

John Worthington pitched a two-hit shutout yesterday to lead Ewa to a 5-0 victory over Utah in the Little League Western Regional Tournament at San Bernadino, Calif.

Ewa is now 1-2 in 11-12 Major Division pool play.

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 0-for-4 with a strikeout batting leadoff in his first game action since his name surfaced in trade rumors Friday. New York won 3-0.

Mike Fetters, Pirates: The Iolani graduate did not pitch as Pittsburgh lost to his former team, Los Angeles, 2-1.

Brandon Villafuerte, Rangers: The Hilo native pitched one inning in Texas' 7-3 loss to Detroit. He gave up one hit and struck out two batters.
