In a career spanning decades, Newton has performed for more than 30 million people, crooning such standards as "Red Roses for a Blue Lady," "Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast" and "She Believes in Me." His prodigious output includes 142 recorded albums, not to mention many cameos on television ("Ally McBeal") and the big screen (the upcoming "Oceans 11"). The entertainer frequently lends his talents to telethons and fund-raisers.
In the past, Newton has been a recipient of the American Legend award and the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's Distinguished Citizens Award and has been declared an Ambassador of Goodwill for the state of Nevada.
The Waikiki Community Center is also home to the Waikiki Health Center, Hawaii Services on Deafness, Hope Chapel, United Self Help and the Waikiki Beach Chaplaincy. The center receives no government funding and is thus reliant on donations as well as fund-raisers such as this concert.
Tickets, priced between $45 and $85, went on sale yesterday. Call the Sheraton-Waikiki Dining Desk, 922-4422.
