Legislature’s Felix
panel hearing set

The Legislature's Joint Felix Investigative Committee will hold its next hearing on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Conference Room 325.

The Department of Education's Felix consent decree compliance officer, Douglas Houck, is scheduled to appear before the committee, which is examining the state's spending practices while trying to comply with the federal mandate to improve services to special-education students.

OHA operations: New Office of Hawaiian Affairs Administrator Clyde Namu'o watched the OHA board Thursday approve a $20 million budget for programs, operations and community support.

Namu'o said he feels the passage of OHA's fiscal year 2002-2003 operational budget is a step in a new direction that focuses more on the people the agency is here to serve.

"We will not be able to solve all the problems of our people in a single budget, but through the programs we are going to fund or administrate in this next year, we can look our beneficiaries in the eyes and tell them we are doing something to help," Namu'o said.

The retired state deputy courts administrator faced a contentious appointment process and public scrutiny by the board.
