The City Council is considering the creation of parks or of fenced off underused portions of existing parks so that our best friends can cavort leash-free. It's about time. Let some parks
go to the dogsWe do a great job for kids and adults who play golf, soccer, football, softball and tennis, but even though households with dogs abound, little is done to accommodate their recreational needs. We all pay for parks so there should be something for everyone. Some fields dedicated to a seasonal sport sit vacant the rest of the year. In contrast, dog parks would be used by many people daily.
The success of two private off-leash dog parks and complaints from people about unleashed dogs in parks and on beaches demonstrate the need for more such sanctuaries. Owners must never take to a communal park a dog with aggressive tendencies. They should clean up after their dogs and be considerate of other dogs and humans.
On behalf of all sociable dogs longing to be free, thank you -- and hurry up.
