Celebrating pineapple

Hawaii's famous gold fruit will be celebrated at the 7th annual Maui Pineapple Festival to be held Aug. 17 to 19 at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. The free three-day event will feature a Maui Pineapple Dessert and Sushi Contest, Keiki Pineapple Olympics, cooking demonstrations, entertainment, a pineapple-eating contest and other activities .

The fun begins at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 17 with Hawaiian Renaissance Music by Pekelo & Friends on the Queen's Stage. There will be face painting by Oona the Clown and pineapple cooking demonstrations presented at 1:30 p.m. by Ruth Yamamura of Maui Electric Co. and at 2:30 p.m. by Outrigger Wailea Resort's executive chef Leanne Kamekona. Versatile will perform on the Queen's Stage at 7 p.m.

Hawaiian entertainment begins at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 18, with the Old Lahaina Luau Show, followed by the Sam Ahia Trio at 1 p.m. and a hula performance at 2:30 p.m.

The Maui Pineapple Dessert and Sushi Contest starts at 11 a.m. with entries accepted from amateur cooks in four categories: cakes, pies, other desserts, and sushi. There will be two divisions of entries: adult -- 18 years and older; and keiki -- ages seven through 17.The main ingredient of all entries must be Hawaiian pineapple, fresh or canned. Entries will be judged on the best use of pineapple, taste and appearance. Entry forms are available at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center Customer Service Center through Saturday.

"A Taste of Pine" will also take place Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. when pineapple desserts created and donated by professional chefs will be sold by volunteers to raise funds for The Maui Farm, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides long-term residential care for youth ages 10 and older referred through the state's foster care and mental health systems.

On Aug. 19, special events for the young ones include a Pineapple Ice Cream Eating Contest at 11 a.m. and a Keiki Club activity at 2 p.m., with entertainment from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
