Mets put Agbayani
on waivers

The Padres reportedly have
interest in trading for the isle native

From staff and wire services

Benny Agbayani is one of several players the New York Mets have asked waivers on to accommodate the club's plan to trade its players this month.

The Mets also have made waiver requests on Todd Zeile, Robin Ventura, Edgardo Alfonzo, Kevin Appier, Mike Piazza and Armando Benitez according to published reports. Piazza and Benitez most likely will be claimed and, just as likely, pulled back by the Mets.

According to the reports, the San Diego Padres are interested in Agbayani and nearly traded for him prior to last Tuesday's trading deadline.

A standout at St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific University, Agbayani is hitting .286 after going 1-for-1 with two walks in the Mets 7-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks last night.

Agabyani's contract, $260,000 for the year, makes him attractive to a team needing help, whereas the other Mets on waivers have contracts in the millions that teams might hesitate to assume.
