Daniels gets the call

By Dave Reardon

Brian Daniels had his bags packed and was ready to go when the phone rang.

It was University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones, offering the former Mililani High School running back a scholarship.

"I was supposed to leave for Dixie (College, Utah) tomorrow," Daniels said yesterday, hours after signing his letter of intent to become a Warrior. "I was a little bit surprised. I'd heard they (UH) were looking at me again, but didn't really know anything for sure. I'm glad to stay here in Hawaii."

The 6-foot, 215-pound Daniels, who runs 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, was spectacular at times last season for the Trojans. But he was bothered by nagging leg injuries.

Daniels rushed for a state-record-tying six touchdowns and 279 yards on 24 carries against Kailua in the second game of the regular season.

But he rushed for more than 100 yards in only one other game.

Daniels' stock rose when he carried 11 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns in a postseason all-star game.

Coaches to stay: Women's assistant volleyball coaches Charlie Wade and Kari Anderson will remain in Manoa this fall.

Both had interviewed for the recently vacated head coaching position at Washington, which announced the hiring of former Kansas State coach Jim McLaughlin yesterday.

"They got a good coach," Wade said. "It was never something that I actively pursued. Athletic director Barbara Hedges was here on vacation. She contacted me.

"UH has made it perfectly clear that they want me around for another season, so I'm thrilled."

Anderson was unavailable for comment yesterday.

Going public: The UH coaches shows are being moved from KFVE to KHET, a public television station.

Don Robbs will host shows with Jones, men's basketball head coach Riley Wallace and baseball head coach Mike Trapasso.

Robbs hosted UH coaches' shows in the 1960s and '70s.

"This will be fun," Robbs said. "I did them back in the dark ages ... the Red Rocha Show, the Dave Holmes Show, the Larry Price Show."

Robbs said the shows will be produced by Scott Culbertson. Mike McCartney, KHET's chief executive officer, worked out the deal with UH.

Refund info: Football season tickets are scheduled to be mailed out Aug. 21. Season-ticket holders who want refunds for the Oct. 26 Fresno State game, which was moved from Oct. 27, have until Sept. 18 to request refunds.

Those who want refunds by mail must include the game tickets and a self-addressed envelope and mail them to the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office, 1337 Lower Campus Road, Honolulu, HI 96822.

Refunds can also be attained by hand-delivering the tickets to the Sheriff Center box office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here and there: Aaron Barret, a walk-on from Temecula, Calif., will get a chance to compete for the football place-kicking job this fall. Barret, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound shortstop, said he also plans to tryout for the baseball team. ... Southern Methodist track and field athlete Florence Ezeh and Texas Christian running back LaDainian Tomlinson were named the winners of the 2000-2001 Joe Kearney Awards as the Western Athletic Conference's top athletes of the year. UH's nominees were volleyball player Lily Kahumoku and quarterback Tim Chang. ... Rainbow Stadium's scoreboard will be replaced soon, Trapasso said. Trapasso is in Atlanta, picking up his wife Catherine and sons Michel and Matthew.
