A male believed to be in his late teens died this morning when the stolen car he was driving crashed as he fled from police.

Police did not say how fast the car was traveling when it crashed or how fast officers were traveling in pursuit.

The car, a 1992 Honda Civic hatchback, was reported stolen at 11:58 last night from a Paaono Street address in Waipio, police said.

A Honolulu police dispatch supervisor said a woman called 911 and reported hearing her car being driven away from her townhouse. A few minutes later, officers saw the car traveling south on Kamehameha Highway and followed it.

Police said an officer attempted to stop the car after it had turned right on Lumiaina Street. Police pursued the car on Lumiaina but when the driver tried to make a right turn onto Pulelo Street, the car slammed into a light pole.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police are awaiting fingerprint tests to identify the driver.

Police closed Lumiaina Street from Lumiauau to Paiwa streets as they conducted their accident investigation. They reopened the street at 6:20 a.m.
