AD at Kahuku"There was a note on my desk telling me the news," Semones said yesterday. "I was excited, but it's a double-edged sword. People in this community care about their athletics."
Semones is the first women's athletic director in Kahuku history.
She said the job will be posted by the Department of Education. After 30 days, the interview process is to begin.
"I hope to get the full-time job after the application process is complete," she said.
"We have 32 athletic programs here, so it's an awesome responsibility," Semones said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Semones replaced Hartwell Lee Loy, who is looking to become athletic director at Waipahu.
St. Louis vs. De La Salle in 2001?: St. Louis School coach Cal Lee said he is looking into a game against De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) this fall.
De La Salle, USA Today's No. 1 team in the nation that owns a record ongoing 113-game winning streak, had a team drop off its schedule the weekend of Sept. 14-15. St. Louis has a bye that weekend.
"We'd have to travel, but we can do it," Lee said. "If they don't mind, let's go ahead and do it."
Lee said he had placed a call to De La Salle athletic director Terry Eidson, but had not heard anything from him by last night.
The Hawaii High School Athletic Association is working on a football doubleheader for 2002 that would pit De La Salle and Southern California power Mater Dei against two Oahu championship teams.
Chung steps down: Archie Chung, whose Pearl City High School girls teams won four state championships and six Oahu Interscholastic Association titles in 13 years, has decided to retire.
The Chargers were 183-27-6 under Chung, qualifying for the state tournament every year. Pearl City finished second three times, third three times and placed lower than fifth just once.
Chung's longtime assistant Frank Baumholtz and Tracee Kono, the Chargers' junior varsity coach last season, have been named co-coaches.
In other Pearl City coaching changes, Mike Morton is the new girls basketball coach and Lionel Villarmia the new boys basketball coach. Both are alumni of Pearl City.
Young new Crusaders volleyball coach: Dexter Young, the intermediate boys volleyball coach at Kamehameha Schools last season, has been named the new varsity coach at St. Louis School. He replaces Rick Tune, who took a junior varsity job at his alma mater Punahou.
Twenty teams scheduled for Iolani tournament: The 19th annual Iolani Invitational Volleyball Tournament, featuring three nationally ranked teams, is set for Aug. 15-18, at Iolani School.
Twenty high school girls teams from Hawaii, California and Canada will compete in the tournament, with a total of 72 matches scheduled over the four-day period. Included in the field are defending champion Harvard-Westlake of California, ranked No. 3; No. 9 Mater Dei of Santa Ana, Calif.; and host Iolani, ranked No. 43 in the preseason Fab 50 rankings announced last week by Student Sports Magazine.
Matches start each day at 9:45 a.m. and finish at around 9 p.m. The championship match is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 18.
Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for students. Children under 6 get in free. Three- or four-day passes are also available.
Other Hawaii schools include Aiea, Farrington, Roosevelt, Leilehua, Kamehameha, Waianae, Hawaii Baptist, Waiakea, St. Joseph and Lanai. Six other California teams and one from Canada are also entered.
