Looking to add power to the lineup, University of Hawaii-Hilo head softball coach Callen Perreira recently signed several sluggers to national letters of intent. Hilo softball team
signs 6 playersThe head of the class is Wendy Layton, who was a two-time first-team Junior College All-America for Shasta (Calif.) Community College. She set seven school records, including most hits (126) and total bases (.472).
Also joining the program are pitcher Tara Martinez, power hitters Kelly Moore, Molly Liston, Tanya Sing Chow and Brandy Smith. Moore earned second-team All-America honors after she batted .423 for Delta (Calif.) College.
"This group of recruits has strengthened our team," Perreira said. "The definite jewels are Wendy Layton and Tara Martinez."
Martinez had a 6-1 record with an ERA of 0.18 for Rancho (Calif.) Cucamonga High School. She also recorded one no-hitter, four shutouts, and batted .380.
Sixth drag race set at Kauai Raceway Park
The Garden Isle Racing Association presents the sixth race of the NHRA Drag Racing on Aug. 5 at Kauai Raceway park in Mana. Racers gate opens at 8 a.m. with qualifying set for 9 a.m.Elimination racing begins at 1 p.m. and will include street cars, competition cars and Jr. dragsters.
With only four races remaining, Riley Takayama leads the street bracket category with 450 points. Rocky Ferraro is second (325), and Walt Barnes and Joey Brun are tied for third with 320 points. For more information, contact GIRA at (808) 823-6246.
UH to host hole-in-one contest in August
The University of Hawaii will host a hole-in-one contest on Aug. 11-12 and Aug. 18-19 at the Hawaii Golf Academy, behind the ROTC Building on the UH lower campus.Proceeds from the event go to the Rainbow Golf Foundation for scholarships. A $20 donation gives each player four shots to the hole from a designated tee. Participants can't be professionals and must be at least 21 years old.
Each hour of the contest, individuals closest to the pin and on the green will be declared winners.
They will receive a dozen golf balls and will also be eligible for the daily prize of a neighbor island trip for two and the grand prize of $10,000. For more information, contact the university at 956-9116.
