Hula Heaven: The Queen's Album
by Mark A. Blackburn (Schiffer, $19.95)

From prolific author and antiquities dealer Blackburn comes another picture book in the usual Schiffer style -- well-printed pictures with little annotation and lots of extraneous material to fluff it up, in this case beautiful pictures of lei decorating the pages, none of which are identified. The pictures in this volume, however, have a poignant history. They come from private photo albums of Queen Liliuokalani, and as such show not only a slice of Hawaiian life in the 1880s and '90s, but the sort of image that the Deposed Queen liked to linger over. Few show the modern world, and most are scenes out of Hawaii's prehistoric past. Some show luaus and musicians, but the majority are of winsome native women, nude or partially covered with flowers, mostly in women-only groups. Images of men are almost non-existent.
