Acia, Hayashi win
4-ball tourney

Rodney Acia and Kevin Hayashi teamed to win yesterday's Golf Concepts 4-Ball Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.

Acia and Hayashi eliminated Beau Yokomoto and Tommy Hines in the semifinal, 4-3. They then had to go two extra holes to top Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield, 1-up on the 20th hole.

Feldmann and Stubblefield advanced to the final with a 1-up win over Brad Bowen and Eddie Lee in the other semifinal.

Hawaii Raiders hoop team falls out of tourney

The Hawaii Raiders, a select team of prep basketball players, bowed out of the Adidas Big Time tournament in Las Vegas with a 91-69 loss to the Oakland Soldiers yesterday.

The Raiders finished the tournament 2-2.

UH football coach Jones headlines QB Club meet

University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones headlines the list of speakers for Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Hotel.

Joining Jones will be UH swim coach Mike Anderson and Outrigger Canoe Club coach Kehau Kali.

The luncheon buffet is $7 and starts at 11:30 a.m. The program is at noon.

Kosty, partner advance to AVP main draw

Former University of Hawaii volleyball player Chris Kosty teamed with Ed Ratledge to win two matches yesterday and advance to today's main draw of the AVP Paul Mitchell Open in Virginia Beach, Va.

Today's main draw features Hawaii's Lee LeGrande and partner Brent Doble, who have won the past two tournaments. The second-seeded LeGrande and Doble will be seeking to become the first AVP team since August 1998 to win three straight titles.

Also competing in the event are former University of Hawaii players Albert Hannemann and Sean Scott, seeded third.

Metzger, Wong advance in FIVB beach doubles

Hawaii's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong won two matches and lost one yesterday to advance to today's third round of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Tour in Espinho, Portugal.

Metzger and Wong, seeded fourth, defeated the French team of Stephane Canet and Mathieu Hamel, 21-12, 21-17, and Australia's Jarred Novosel and Slack, 23-21, 17-21, 23-21. Metzger and Wong fell to Brazil's Jose Loiola and Ricardo Santos, 26-24, 21-17.

Hawaii's Own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: the St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific alumnus did not play in the Mets' 6-1 win over the Phillies. Agbayani should be in the lineup today, since he is 5-for-14 lifetime, with a homer, against probable starter Omar Daal.

Brandon Villafuerte, Rangers: The Hilo native was called up to the Rangers between games of a doubleheader Wednesday. He saw his first action of the year in Texas' 13-7 win over Tampa Bay. Villafuerte pitched the final inning, walking two batters and striking out one.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School product didn't pitch in Los Angeles' 4-2 win over Colorado.
