Lucky Marine goes
humming along

NOT since wrestler Lucky Simunovich has someone in Hawaii been called "Lucky" by so many people. I'm referring to Marine Cpl. Jon David Harwell, who won an $84,000 Hummer from Mike McKenna Motors at BayFest at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base by tossing a paper airplane 50 feet, dead-center through an 8-inch hole. His wife calls him "the luckiest guy I ever met," and the 21-year-old hears, "Hey, Lucky," wherever he goes in his Hummer. Not so lucky was McKenna, who was out of town when Lucky Harwell made his incredible toss, and heard about it while driving on (and nearly off) an L.A. freeway ...

INTERVIEWING 101: Miss Hawaii USA Juliet Lightner was a guest on Channel 8's morning newscast yesterday, chatting with newscaster Lyle Galdeira. He must have had a list of questions instead of listening to his guest and following up on what she had to say. She remarked that domestic violence was a primary part of her agenda because she was a victim of it and nearly died. Galdeira's "follow-up" was "How do you prepare for the pageant?" Say what? ... At a Chamber of Commerce gathering, the subject of pride in one's alma mater came up, and new UH President Evan Dobelle joked to St. Louis President Father Allen DeLong, "From now on I am going to say I am a St. Louis graduate" ...

THE letter reads, "No, you're not alone." The day before, I had posed the question of why U.S. Rep. Gary Condit always carries his jacket and never seems to wear it. Localite Kenneth Reed Armstrong wrote Rep. Condit with four tips on behavior in the missing-intern case. Tip No. 1: "You're not Bobby Kennedy. Put on the damn jacket!" ...

Fun Fun Funds

HE sings the praises of mutual funds during the day, but at night First Pacific Capital CEO Terry Lee sings of other things. With partner Rudy King Jr., Lee is the leader of the duo Horizon, and their CD "Island Days" is getting lots of radio airplay. And Horizon has a regular Thursday through Saturday night gig at Planet Hollywood. In an interview with "Gusto-philes" hostess Jo McGarry on KCCN, Lee talked of both his day and night jobs, and how they're sometimes combined. "Island Days," he reveals, was recorded at his office after hours ...

IT was a regular "Donnybrook" at Murphy's this week when two old pals got together for lunch. Donn Tyler, who now lives in Santa Fe, was chowing down with Don Robbs, who both broadcasts UH baseball games and consults with Hawaii Public Television. Tyler for years owned Commercial Recording locally, and both Donn and Don worked for K-POI in the '60s ...

Not so sad Sam

REMEMBER promoter Sad Sam Ichinose, who always had that look on his face, no matter how successful his latest promotion was? Well, we now have Sam Sato in Wailuku, who may become known as "Smilin' Sam." A friend visiting Wailea was told by everyone to visit Sam Sato's for the lunch of a lifetime. The friend did, arriving early at 11 a.m. and finding a line going out the door and into the parking lot. And this on a weekday. Maybe next time ...
