Kyono set to defend
stroke play title

Rachel Kyono will return to defend her title at the Aug. 7-9 Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Tournament at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Also in the field are the two 11-year-old golfers who have won the other two majors for Hawaii female golfers: Michelle Wie, the Jennie K. champion, and Stephanie Kono, the winner of the women's match play championship.

Past champions Anna Umemura, Yuko Abergas and Merynn Ito are also entered.

The event is open to women belonging to the HSWGA or HSJGA with a handicap index of 11.2 or less as of Aug. 1.

Waipahu earns P.O.N.Y regional championship

Jowen Thornton-Murray scattered two hits and Waipahu edged Windward 3-2 to win the P.O.N.Y. Pony (13-14) Regional Championship at Mililani District Park.

Waipahu advances to the West Zone Tournament, Aug. 11-15, in Fullerton, Calif. The zone winner goes on to the World Series, Aug. 18-25.

Zodrow picked the best at USA volleyball camp

Brian Zodrow, a 2001 graduate of St. Louis School, was named the most valuable player at the recent High Performance volleyball training camp sponsored by USA Volleyball.

Zodrow, a 6-foot-3 opposite, was among an elite group of nationally selected players invited to attend the camp at the Long Beach State Pyramid.

Zodrow will be playing volleyball for the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., this fall.

Youth baseball team moves on to Indiana

The Hawaii Warriors beat San Luis, Ariz. 9-2 in the championship game of the Pacific Southwest Division of the Babe Ruth / Cal Ripken 9- and 10-year-old division.

The title qualifies them for the World Series to be held in Vincennes, Indiana, from Aug. 3- 11.

The Warriors won all four of their games in the tournament, outscoring their opponents 42-9.

Four players made the all-tournament team: Reyn Nagamine, Tyler Young, Reyn Kimura, and Carlton Tanabe.

Nagamine was named MVP of the tournament.

Base Race series continues at Wheeler

Wheeler Army Air Field will host the USO Hawaii 10- and 5-kilometer Races -- the third of the "Base Race Series" -- Aug. 12.

Some 1,300 runners and walkers are expected to compete in the benefit for the USO Hawaii.

The Base Race Series began in 1999 and was held at Hickam Air Force Base; last year, it was held at Marine Corps Base Hawaii (Kaneohe).

Both races start at 7 a.m. This year's race theme is "The Run to Disney's California Adventure," with the grand prize in post-race drawings a trip for two to Disney's California Adventure Park.

The entry is $15 for entries mailed by July 31, $18 after that.

Coloma leads Ewa Beach to Little League title

Pake Coloma pitched the Ewa Beach All-Stars to a 4-3 win over Pearl City yesterday to become the champions of the Hawaii State Little League Major League.

The team will leave Aug. 2 to represent Hawaii in the Little League Regionals in San Bernadino, California, Aug. 4-14.
