Registration will begin next month for Honolulu Academy of Arts studio art classes for children and adults. Sign up for
art classesThe 11-week studio art classes for children program runs from Sept. 22 through Dec. 8. Classes include "Exploring Two and Three Dimensional Art" for grades K-4, "Cartooning" for grades 4-6 and "Drawing and Painting" for grades 5-12. Cost for tuition is $100. Registration begins Aug. 8.
The Art Center's adult art education program begins a 14-week series of art classes Sept. 11 through Dec. 15.
Instruction will be offered in basic drawing, life drawing, painting, watercolor, Chinese brush painting, mixed media, papermaking, printmaking, intaglio, lithography, ceramics, jewelry, polyme clay, weaving, basketry and cinema studies.
Tuition is $140 general, $130 for Academy members, plus additional lab and supply fees. Registration forms will be available at the Art Center beginning Aug. 8. For information, call 532-8741.
Singing the old way
Some old-style sounds will be worth cash prizes for local musicians in the 19th annual "Ka Himeni Ana" concert on Aug. 18.Performers must play unamplified, in the nahenahe (old-fashioned) style.
This year's honoree is Haunani Apolonia, Na Hoku Hanohano winner and Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee.
The concert takes place at 8 p.m. at Hawaii Theatre. Tickets range from $6 to $30 and are on sale now at the theater box office. Call 395-9311 for more information.
Tao of voice taught
Stephen Chun-Tao Cheng's "Tao of Voice" technique mixes voice lessons with Chinese philosophy: "Bring your voice, mind, body and spirit into harmony for better health, better relationships," he advises.Cheng, a tenor and voice instructor, will hold four levels of workshops teaching his technique, which intergrates ch'i breathing practices and Western approaches. All workshops will be held at the Academy of the Pacific, 913 Alewa Drive. Call 388-2438 for information.

The fee is $95.Take Workshop I plus II or III for $135, all three workshops for $175, or Workshops II and III for $85.>>Workshop II: Deeper understanding of the "Tao of Voice" technique. Speaking workshop will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 10; singing workshop runs 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 11. The fee is $55. Prerequisite: Workshop I.

>>Tao of Voice -- Master Workshop: Refine vocal skills, get group instruction and private instructions, 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 13 to 17, and 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18. Student recitals, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 19, are free. Workshop fee: $525. Prerequisite: Workshop I.
Cheng will be joined in "An East-West Concert" by guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Cheng has acted and sung on Broadway, television and in movies and has toured the globe to promote international relations through the arts.
Lima, a reknowned Brazilian guitarist and composer, is a favorite among Hawaii audiences.

Boat Days fund-raiser
The Aloha Boat Days fund-raiser reception will take place aboard the cruise ship MS Patriot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.The cost is $75 per person for the lunch program, with silent auction and entertainment.
Funds raised would help maintain the program that has welcomed more than 300,000 passengers during Boat Days festivities.
