Isle golfers off pace at U.S. girls juniors
Kauai's Rachel Kyono shot a four-over 74 yesterday to tie for 31st place at the U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship at the Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan.Kyono was seven strokes behind leader Aree Song Wongluekiet of Florida going into today's final round of stroke play.
Honolulu's Ayumi Hori was tied for 54th at 76 and Dale Gammie of Pukalani was tied for 82nd at 78. Also, Pukalani's Rie Ganie was tied for 91st at 79 and Lisa Kajihara of Maui was at 80, tied for 106th.
Leahi soccer team finishes third in Cup
The Leahi Soccer Club '87 (girls under-14) from Honolulu placed third at the Schwan's USA Cup in Minneapolis Sunday.Leahi '87, coached by Laurie Baker and Scott Keopuhiwa, won their pool then defeated AZFC Hammers, 2-1, in the quarterfinal match.
The Hawaii team lost to Team Chicago, 1-0, in a shootout in the semifinal.
Gymnastics Day celebrated in Hawaii
National Gymnastics Day will be celebrated in Hawaii on Aug. 25 with exhibitions at Windward Mall in Kaneohe and Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.Today Gov. Ben Cayetano was scheduled to sign a proclamation in honor of the event. Hawaii's state directors, 12 of the top local gymnasts and their coaches are also expected to attend.

Hamamoto tees it up at U.S. amateur golf
Jarett Hamamoto of Hilo began his quest for the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship today in San Antonio.Hamamoto shot an even-par 71 during yesterday's practice round. Stroke play finishes tomorrow with the top 64 golfers advancing to match play beginning Thursday.
The semifinals and final are scheduled for Saturday.
Caling football combine Saturday at Roosevelt
High school football players will have the opportunity to document their speed and strength at the 3rd Lino Caling Combine 8 a.m. Saturday at Roosevelt High School.Players will be tested in the 40-yard dash, shuttle run, vertical jump and bench press. All high school players are invited to participate. The results will be included in a booklet to be sent to four-year and junior colleges across the country for recruiting purposes.
Waipahu goes 14-0, advances to regional
Waipahu went undefeated during the Oahu Cal Ripken Baseball League's major division play, winning all 14 games.Waipahu will represent Hawaii in the regional tournament, Aug. 10-12, at the Aiea Annex Field. The winner advances to the World Series in Vincennes, Ind., Aug. 18-26.
9 Hawaii triathletes to Lake Placid triathlon
Nine athletes from Hawaii will be competing at the Isuzu Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon in New York on July 29.Six-time Ironman World Championship competitor Chris Tang of Honolulu is among the group. Also competing are triathlon veterans Robert Egbert, Joseph Zwack and Tanya Florin.
Competing in their first Ironman event are Vanessa Beaton, Sheryl Toda and Jennifer Harris of Honolulu, and Kailua's Mandy Racines.
The athletes are competing for 100 qualifying spots in the Ironman in Kona this October.
