Former University of Hawaii head coach Dick Tomey will join KFVE-TV (Channel 5) broadcaster Jim Leahey in the booth this fall as the analyst for the upcoming Hawaii football games.

"When you're not coaching, you have all the answers," Tomey said yesterday. "I have a lot to learn, but hopefully I can provide insightful analysis of what's happening on the football field."

Tomey, who stepped down as head coach at the University of Arizona in November, said he tried out as a color commentator for ESPN, but failed to land the job. He said he would work for KFVE for one year, but would have to wait and see after that.

"I love the University of Hawaii," Tomey said. "But if I get another opportunity to coach, I would certainly consider it. There were 10 guys who tried out for the ESPN job, but I'm perfectly happy here. Sitting next to Jim Leahey will be a lot of fun. I can learn a lot from a pro like him."

Leahey has broadcast UH football since 1984. His broadcast partners have included UH football players, but this will be the first time he has worked with a former head coach.

"Dick's intimate, first-hand knowledge of today's game is unmatched," Leahey said. "Here's a man who has taken his team to the top of the national rankings and nearly captured a national championship. I'm anxious to get to work with him."

Tomey replaces Larry Goeas, a former player of Tomey's. Goeas has been in the KFVE booth the past four years.

"This is a great opportunity for me," Tomey said. "I have a lot of good friends around the (Western Athletic Conference), including Pat Hill at Fresno State, who was on my staff. I look forward to working with the fine coaches in this league.''
