Vicky Cayetano
looks like royalty
to lei-giver

DON'T ever tell Vicky Cayetano that she doesn't look like a princess. The wife of Gov. Ben Cayetano was with her husband at a state dinner for Japan's visiting Prince Takamado and Princess Hisako and the Honolulu Boy Choir performed. Two boys approached the head table, and one presented the prince with a lei, but the boy with the lei for Princess Hisako mistakenly approached Mrs. Cayetano to present it to her, giving everyone a good laugh. Following the choir's performance, where the boys outnumbered the guests 42 to 19, one youngster asked Princess Hisako, "Have you always been a princess?" "Yes," she told him, "I've been one all my life." Final note: The choir's director is aptly named Dale Noble ...

LONGTIME UH baseball fan John Wells was somewhat fanatic in his love of the Rainbows. Not only did he never miss a game at Rainbow Stadium, he also went on at least one road trip a year with coach Les Murakami and his squad. Apparently his loyalty was not unreciprocated. When he died and services were held for him at Punchbowl, friends were surprised when one mourner turned up and wheeled up to the services. Yes, it was coach Murakami, saying his goodbyes to a fan whose loyalty had turned into friendship. Some of Wells' fellow Honolulu Ford employees were visibly moved that the retired coach, recovering from a stroke, made the effort to attend the services ...

TWO old pals talk story about the good old days in Waikiki on "Emme & Friends" Saturday evening. Hostess Emme Tomimbang gets Don Ho to talk about his new singing kids, Kelii Ho and Hoku Ho, 14 and 20 years old respectively, and Iva Kinimaka gets his two cents in as well. Ho reveals that a song Kinimaka wrote, "He Aloha Mele" was the inspiration for naming his daughter "Hoku." ...

LIVING in Kailua for 25 years, Tessa Robins was a neighbor of isle actor Harry Williams, though the two never met. Ultimately, she moved to her home in Sussex, England, and Williams relocated to Incline Village, Nev. Williams was good friends with MaryAnne Stubenberg and husband David, who also had moved to Incline, and one day MaryAnne introduced Williams to Robins via e-mail. Williams flew to England, the two had a wonderful tryst and now are joining a Baltic cruise with the Stubenbergs and 14 other Hawaii folks. Singles in the group had best be forewarned about the Cupid tendencies of MaryAnne ...

Queen of quips

DEATH claimed the Washington Post's Katharine Graham yesterday, reminding me of the great line she got off during a newspaper publishers' convention in Honolulu years ago. Local publisher Phil Gialanella had personally selected a singer to perform for the group and the well-oiled singer and his show went on so very long that Gialanella admitted he wished a hole would open under his chair, enabling him to escape the premises. That feeling returned the next day when Graham took the microphone and said, "There were times during last night's show I was sure the Iran hostage crisis would end before it did." ...
