creative crew"That's just such a nice thing, I can't think of anything better," said Creative/Production Director Rebecca Penney.
All three commercials -- or "spots" -- the station entered, made the list of national finalists.
While none was awarded a trophy, "they'll send me a little token," Penney said, "I love being recognized by my peers."
The competition, with 37 categories, was open to some 40,000 advertising agencies, recording studios and radio stations across the country. Penney said that in each category, one winner and two finalists are chosen.
The Penney-written, Penney-produced commercials were, in the "Best Copywriting" category: "The Team," for Meadow Gold Dairy, featuring the voice of morning show co-host Michael W. Perry; in the healthcare category, "Shower Fun," for Caress Shower Gels, voiced by Perry and morning show-partner Larry Price; and in the food and beverage category, "Gloria Jeans Tour," for Gloria Jeans Coffee, featuring the voices of Kathy Nakagawa of sister station KIKI 93.9 FM and account executives Alfredo Villegas and Frank Hooton.
Each of the account executives added the necessary French and Italian accents to complement the coffee purveyor's "Italian Chiller" and "French Chiller" beverages. "It was a little tour -- no passport required," Penney said, adding the humorous disclaimer from the nationally recognized spot.
The station has won several Pele awards over the years, which are statewide awards presented by the American Advertising Federation-Honolulu District.
In 1993, the year KSSK won an unprecedented third-year-in-a-row Pele for best radio commercial, the station also won a national award in the Radio Advertising Bureau's second-annual Radio-Mercury Award competition.
The station won the $20,000 prize in the radio-station-produced category for a Subaru commercial written and produced for Schuman Carriage
