Neglected horses doing
well at North Shore

Question: What ever happened to the two Andalusian horses removed from their owners due to neglect?

Answer: The stallion and mare are still in the care of the Hawaiian Humane Society while they are awaiting adoption.

Eve Holt, spokesman for the society, said a third party has come forward claiming ownership of the horses, so until the legal issues are straightened out, the adoption will be put on hold. The horses are almost at ideal weight and are doing well at a remote North Shore location, Holt said.

According to previous accounts, the horses were grossly underweight and in need of veterinary care when they came to the attention of the society last fall. The two horses, along with a third horse, were being kept in manure-filled stalls in Kahuku.

Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto has allowed owner Polly Ward to keep the third horse, a quarter-horse mare, that the society alleges had also been neglected.

If Ward meets court guidelines for its care, the deferred acceptance of a guilty plea she entered in the neglect case will be removed from her record.
