St. Louis School president Father Allen DeLong is leaving the door open for Cal Lee to stay on as head coach of the school's varsity football team.

In a statement issued yesterday, DeLong said the administration would like Lee to remain as head coach and "will leave his position open in the event he would change his mind."

Lee announced last week that he will retire as head football coach after the upcoming season. He will remain at the school as athletic director.

Lee built the Crusader program into a football powerhouse over two decades as head coach. His teams have won 15 Prep Bowl or state championships and 17 Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles.

"Whether he stays with our institution or decides to pursue other opportunities," DeLong said, "I want to take the opportunity to publicly acknowledge his fine work in the athletic program and in other areas, such as assisting with the schools' capital and fundraising campaigns.

"We plan to continue the momentum, building upon St. Louis School's mission to provide academic excellence and more."

Lee was unavailable for comment.
