Shishido early leader
in OCC men's golf

Iolani School golfer Pomaikai Shishido carded an opening round 67 to take a two-stroke lead into today's second round of the Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational golf tournament.

Tied for second at 69 were Casey Kobashigawa, Tony Okano and 1998 champion Brandan Kop. In at 70 were defending champion Joe Phengsavath and recent Rainbow Open winner Parker McLachlin.

Second-round play continued today. The final round of the 54-hole tournament is on Sunday.

In the 36-hole Senior Flight, George Yamamoto carded a 72 for a two-stroke lead over Art Costas. Taking a three-stroke lead into today's final round of the Super Senior Flight was Wendell Kop, who shot a 78.



Seki out of Publinx
after second round

Honolulu's Jim Seki lost his second-round match at the U.S. Amateur Men's Public Links Championship yesterday in San Antonio.

Seki, a Punahou School graduate who went on to play at Stanford, was eliminated by Mark Farrell of Westport, Conn., 2 and 1. He was the only Hawaii golfer to advance to the match play portion of the tournament.

Iacovelli, Figueira named Gatorade track athletes

Punahou's Todd Iacovelli and Kelly Figueira from Sacred Hearts Academy were named the state Gatorade High School Track & Field Athletes of the Year.

Iacovelli won the 1,500- and 3,000-meters at the state meet. Figueira set a state record in the long jump, and won the 100- and 200-meter runs at the state meet. She was also a member of the winning 100- and 200-meter relay teams.

Miyajima, Tsukada lead Pua Melia tournament

Shayna Miyajima carded a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to lead the championship flight of the 25th Pua Melia Invitational women's golf tournament at Olomana Golf Links.

Kathy Tsukada, a stroke back at 74, had the flight's low net score of 66. Bev Kim (76) and Sanae Vierra (81) were tied for second in low net with a 71.

Play finished today.

Kono, Brown named sportspersons of June

Stephanie Kono, an 11-year old golfer, and Pat Brown, 71-year-old multi-sport athlete, were named outstanding female and male sportspersons of the month for June by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Kono, a Punahou sixth grader, won the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Match Play championship June 29.

Brown, from Pearl City, earned five gold medals in the Aloha State Games track and field competition June 9. He also set a state games record of 37.0 in the 200 meters for the 70-74 age group.

The two will be recognized at Monday's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

L-C State signs three Hawaii baseball players

Three players from Hawaii have accepted scholarships to play baseball for Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho.

Joining the Warriors are Hubert Pruitt (Kamehameha), Gavin Concepcion (Pearl City) and L.A. Pierce College tranfer Kona Sampaio (St. Louis). Sampaio was an all-conference outfielder as a freshman but did not play last season due to a shoulder injury.

The L-C State roster includes four other Hawaii high school products: Micah Furtado, Kyle Correa, Aaron Matsui and Justin Matsukawa, the latter a transfer from Hawaii-Hilo.

Drift Session set for Raceway Park

Hawaii Raceway Park is holding a "Drift Session'' tomorrow from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Vehicles will make single car passes through a road course while attempting to drift (losing rear wheel traction while achieving maximum oversteer) their vehicle through all turns.

Races are open to the public. A valid driver's license is required. The charge is $8 for drivers and spectators.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus struck out swinging leading off an inning three times against knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School graduate gave up a run in one inning, allowing a double to Ramon Hernandez, who scored on a sacrifice fly.
