Lawmakers will vote to override
Cayetano's veto of consent billby Richard Borreca
rborreca@starbulletin.comGov. Ben Cayetano vetoed the measure, saying it was too harsh, inconsistent and technically flawed. Lawmakers, however said the bill was the result of a compromise with various community groups and would serve to protect young girls from predatory men.
Sen. Jonathan Chun, (D-Kauai), was instrumental in rounding up the 17 votes needed to call the Senate back into the special session. Today he said he was able to get 14 Democratic votes and three Republicans votes and then the other Democrats also agreed.
The Senate had said it would be willing to override the veto, while House members said they were uncertain.
But this afternoon, Chun, the Senate majority leader, said the House agreed to also go back into special session.
If the legislature overrides Cayetano's veto, it will be the first time in 40 years that a gubernatorial veto has been rejected.
