Kailua parade
biz winners

A popular Kailua business and an elementary school drove away from the annual Kailua Fourth of July parade with more prizes than all other entrants.

The biggest win, place or show-ers, were Hardware Hawaii True Value and the Enchanted Lake Elementary School Music Ensemble.

The hardware store, a Kailua fireworks sponsor, took first place in the Best Overall and Commercial Unit categories, as well as third place in the Large Float and Best Use of Theme categories.

Enchanted Lake's ensemble won first place in the Best Use of Theme category, and second place in the Best Overall, Large Float and Live Music Unit categories. It took the Hawaii Pacific University band to beat the elementary school, out of several live band participants.

Barry Prettyman, senior store manager for the Kailua Hardware Hawaii, said the entry's theme was "Your Dream Garden," assembled on a red-white-and-blue bunting-bedecked flatbed truck festooned with potted flowering plants and a spouting water fountain as its centerpiece. As every dream garden should have live music, the Swingin' Tradewinds Jass Band played tunes as it rocked and rolled behind the greenery.

The Enchanted Lake Elementary theme was "Ahupua'a" -- a section of land extending from mountains to ocean. The flatbed truck bore the requisite mountain sloping down toward colorful ocean scenes with dolphins and turtles of corrugated cardboard prepared by school families.

Time for an update

Outside Kengo's Restaurant Lounge at Restaurant Row, a glass-encased photo shows KITV anchor Shawn Ching and another man wearing headsets with boom-microphones from when the venue hosted a weekly "talk to the coach," radio broadcast.

Ching's co-worker, KITV Sports Director Robert Kekaula, just happened by as the old photo was studied last week. He provided confirmation that the radio show is no longer there. Of course, neither is the other man pictured -- former U.H. football coach Fred Von Appen.
