Tour isle the pono way

From ancient Hawaiian heiau, to Native Hawaiian fish ponds and petroglyphs, those wishing to experience the real Hawaii that has, in many cases, been considered off limits by the locals, now have a guide to sacred and spiritual sites.

Eco-Cultural Excursions offers three Oahu excursions, dubbed "Real Wet," "Real Tropical" and "Real Sacred."

On both of the latter, guides lead small groups down paths that their Polynesian ancestors walked some 1,500 years ago to witness the beauty and the ecology that is still present. All guides are native Hawaiian environmentalists and conservationists.

Ebb & Flow on Maui

Ebb & Flow Arts hosts its first Arts Festival on Maui, July 19 and 20. The festival starts on the 19th at Pat Masumoto's New Gallery/Studio at 51 N. Market St. where several pianists will take turn performing Erik Satie's "Vexations" (1900), from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

On the 20th, Honolulu Symphony first violinist Iggy Jang and guest harpist Sirin Pancaroglu, will give an "informance" on harp and violin, with a discussion of multimedia connections, from 7 to 7:40 p.m. at Makawao Union Church, 1445 Baldwin Ave. They will follow this with an 8 p.m. program of works by Claude Debussy, Astor Piazzolla, Jee Young Kim, Manuel de Falla and other composers. Integral to this multi-media effort is the accompanying color harp played by Maui visual artists Andrew Annenberg, Frances Ku and Heather Rendel.

On the final day, puppeteer Frank Kane will conduct a Children's Puppetry Workshop from noon to 1 p.m. at Waipuna Chapel. Frances Ku will display her paintings from 1 to 6 p.m. outside the chapel; Kelly Arbor and Eva von Loon will read poetry from 2 to 3:30 p.m.; and at 7 p.m. Richard Nelson will demonstrate his digital animation and music, with an informance on "Josef Albers and his Influence."

As a grand finale the Ebb & Flow Ensemble -- featuring Jang, cellist Greg Dubay and pianist Robert Pollock -- will perform works by Maurice Ravel, Piazzolla, Anton Webern and present the world premiere of Pollock's "Trio No. 4."

The festival is free. For more information, call (808) 876-1854.
