Tinman triathlon
rescheduled for July 22

Due to a potential problem with box jellyfish on the swim course, one of the most popular triathlons in the country has been moved to later this month.

The date of the 21st Tinman Triathlon at Ala Moana Beach Park has been moved from July 15 to July 22.

The event includes an 800-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike and a 10-kilometer run.

Refund requests are being accepted. For more information, call 732-7311 or 596-0588.

Bragado, partner advance to volleyball Round of 16

Honolulu's Danalee Bragado and partner Ali Wood of California went 2-1 yesterday to advance to today's Round of 16 of the $180,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event at Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.

Yesterday, Bragado and Wood defeated Maria Jose Shuller and Cristina Pereira of Portugal, 21-16, 19-21,15-12, and Rebekka Kadijk and Marritt Leenstra of the Netherlands, 21-11 and 21-17 (31). The loss was to top seeds Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede, 21-13, 21-11.

Metzger, Wong advance in FIVB beach doubles

Hawaii's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong went 2-1 to advance to today's Round of 16 of the $180,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Stavanger, Norway.

The third-seeded Hawaii team lost to Japan's Satoshi Watanabe and Katsuhiro Shiratori, 16-21, 21-13, 17-15 in the opening round. Metzger and Wong came back to win two losers bracket matches, defeating Premysl Kubala and Martin Lebl 21-17, 19-21, 21-10, and topping Dax Holdren-Todd Rogers, 21-19, 17-21, 17-15.

Big boats battling it out

The battle of the big boats continued yesterday in the 41st Transpacific Yacht Race.

As of yesterday morning, Bob McNulty's 74-foot Chance was hanging on to a two-mile lead over Philippe Kahn's Pegasus.

A mile back in third was Roy E. Disney's 73-foot Pyewacket.

If not quite in sight of one another, the trio is close enough to continue their three-way tactical sparring.

In fourth, Bob Lane's Medicine Man from Long Beach, Calif., continued its recent surge with 293 miles in the previous 24 hours -- the best day's run by any of the 32 boats remaining in the race.

Shanakee II, which left port on June 25, was expected to cross the Diamond Head finish line sometime today.

However, due to the handicap system, it is doubtful that Shankee II will win the first-to-finish trophy after the elapsed-time calculations are made.

Honolulu businessman Dan Doyle is about halfway home in the 30-foot sloop Two Guys On the Edge, the smallest among the 32 remaining boats in the race.

Doyle and Burgess are expected to arrive around 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14. They may miss the awards banquet July 13.

In other divisions, James McDowell of Maui continued to lead Division II aboard Grand Illusion. The Japanese yacht Bengal II was leading Division III and Bull remained the Division IV leader.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus went 0-for-4 in an 8-3 loss.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: A day after coming off the disabled list, the Iolani graduate suffered his worst outing of the season. Fetters relieved Al Reyes in the eighth inning of Seattle's 13-0 blowout of the Dodgers, giving up six runs, four earned, without recording an out.
