Mike Taylor is the new varsity girls division I basketball coach at Punahou School, Buffanblu athletic director Kale Ane said today.

Taylor takes over for Shelly Fey. Fey stepped down voluntarily after last season because of a new job at Punahou that demands more of her time.

Taylor, who is a teacher at Punahou, was an assistant to Fey last year. Prior to that, he was head coach at Maryknoll for two years for the Spartans' varsity division I girls.

He was named the Star-Bulletin's state coach of the year for leading Maryknoll to the state tournament in 1999.

"He gets along well with the kids and is very motivational," Ane said. "It helps that there will be a smooth transition because he was already an assistant here."

Taylor is a 1990 graduate of Punahou and a 1995 graduate of the University of Hawaii.
