UH moves homecoming
football game to Nov. 10

A change in the University of Hawaii football schedule has necessitated a change in the date of the homecoming game.

The game is now scheduled for Nov. 10 against Boise State at Aloha Stadium. The event sponsor remains Hawaiian Airlines.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, against Fresno State. Last month, the game against the Bulldogs was moved to Friday, Oct. 26, at 4:05 p.m. to accommodate a national television broadcast by ESPN.

"We're working with University Relations and the alumni association to include activities for the whole weekend,'' said UH associate athletic director Jim Donovan. "It will include something in conjunction with the Wahine volleyball game (Nov. 9 against Fresno State).''

Surfers dominate NSSA championships

Hawaii surfers won 10 of 16 titles and swept the high school men's and women's championships at the National Scholastic Surfing Association nationals, which finished Saturday at San Clemente, California.

Hawaii's Lance Gruver won the open boys' division for surfers 12-and-under in his first national appearance. He also received the Kalani Robb Award for the most inspirational performance among open division surfers.

Other winners from Hawaii were: Kepa Kruse (open bodyboard), Granger Larsen (open mini groms), Robbie Schofield (explorer men), Joel Centeio (explorer junior), TJ Barron (explorer boys), Kai Barger (explorer menehunes), Sena Seramur (explorer women), Keegan Edwards (explorer longboard) and Josh Wells (explorer bodyboard).

Hawaii surfers also claimed second-place trophies in five divisions. The only division that did not have a Hawaii surfer place in the top six was the explorer super seniors for ages 45 and older.

Kahumoku hurt during practice with U.S. team

UH outside hitter Lily Kahumoku sprained her ankle while training with the U.S. A-2 national volleyball team last month in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Kahumoku has left the developmental team and is recuperating at the home of her parents, who recently moved from Texas to Alabama.

The junior landed on the foot of another player during practice and rolled her ankle. Team coordinator Mark Pryor classified the injury as a second- or third-degree sprain and said that Kahumoku was on crutches.

The injury occurred a few days after the team returned from the eight-team Volley Masters tournament in Montreux, Switzerland. It was the first major international competition for the U.S. volleyball team since last summer's Olympics.

Kahumoku was the youngest player on the roster that featured six Olympians, including former Wahine Robyn Ah Mow and Heather Bown. Kahumoku played sparingly in the team's four matches.

Pearl City Pearls win ASA softball title

Natalie Fujimoto's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Pearl City Pearls over Mililani Prep, 5-4, in Sunday's championship game of the ASA 18-under girls state softball tournament at Ala Wai Field.

Pearl City came out of the losers bracket of the double-elimination tourney, defeating Mililani 2-1 in the first game Sunday to force a deciding game.

Pearl City declined the berth in the national tournament, opting to participate in the Babe Ruth Pacific Regional in California. Mililani will go to the ASA National Tournament in Virginia.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific product and New York had the day off.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate is on the disabled list and is eligible to return to action Thursday.
