Honolulu police are still looking for information about the June 9 accident on the H-1 freeway viaduct in Kahala in which a car went airborne over a side barrier and plunged onto Waialae Avenue 40 feet below. Racing, drugs and alcohol
are ruled out in
fatal Kahala crashBy Nelson Daranciang
ndaranciang@starbulletin.comThe car, driven by 18-year-old Logan Fujimoto, smashed apart into several pieces. Fujimoto, a recent Kalani High School graduate, died at the scene.
Toxicology tests performed by the Honolulu medical examiner's office showed that Fujimoto did not have any alcohol or illegal drugs in his system at the time of the crash.
And based on interviews with witnesses a week after the crash, "We can safely assume that there was no racing at the time of accident," said Sgt. John Agno, Honolulu police traffic investigator.
One witness told police he was about to enter H-1 at the Waialae onramp, saw the crash, then stopped to attend to Fujimoto.
However, he left the scene before police had a chance to question him. He called CrimeStoppers after police put out a call for witnesses.
The witness said there was no other car on the freeway at the time of the crash, Agno said.
"His information was really valuable," he said.
Police also interviewed the driver of a white sedan who some witnesses said fled the accident scene after the crash.
Agno said investigators were able to verify that the man did travel on Waialae Avenue but was not at the crash scene at the time of the accident. That driver told police he did not see the crash.
