Ostler eyes NBA
summer league chance

Former University of Hawaii basketball player Troy Ostler hasn't given up on the NBA.

Ostler wasn't drafted Wednesday nor contacted, as of last night, by any teams as a free agent. But his agent, Ben Pensack, is looking for opportunities for the 6-foot-10 forward to showcase himself.

"He's trying to hook me up with one of the NBA's three summer leagues," Ostler said. "One of them is here in Utah."

Earlier this week, Ostler worked out in Orange County, Calif., for Mitsubishi of Japan's top pro league. Ostler, who worked out with seven other prospects, said he felt he performed well. But he said neither he nor Pensack have been contacted yet.

"There's no timetable," Ostler said. "I do know their league starts around September, and they filmed us and the film gets passed around to other teams.

"I feel good about it," he said.

Centeio, Suehiro win national surf titles

Campbell High's Joel Centeio and Helena Suehiro of King Kekaulike won the top high school division titles yesterday at the NSSA National Champions at Dana Point, Calif.

Centeio has a chance to become the first surfer ever to win the triple crown award by taking the high school men, open men and junior national.

Suehiro is the first Hawaii surfer to win the women's crown. Jennifer Newhouse of Kalaheo finished third, one spot ahead of Alee Thompson of Kahuku.

In the longboard division, Eli Klukowski of King Kekaulike was fourth and Ian Soutar fifth. Mark Mondello of King Kekaulike was third in the bodyboard competition with Keegan Yuson of Kalaheo fifth.

King Kekaulike was the top Hawaii high school among the 14 schools competing, placing fifth. Campbell finished sixth, Kahuku 10th and Kalaheo 12th.

Paddlers defend titles in Liberty World Challenge

Team Hawaii, consisting of 12 top male and female paddlers from Hawaii, will defend their respective men's and women's division titles tomorrow in the 5th annual Liberty World Challenge at New York.

Over 70 crews are expected in the 14-mile race.

Humu masters swim postponed until August

The Humu International Masters Swimming Championship, originally scheduled for July 5-8, has been rescheduled for Aug. 2-5 due to renovations at the University of Hawaii pool.

Registration has been reopened with the new entry deadline of July 20. Age-group divisions run from 19-24 to 95-over.

The event includes a 1-mile ocean swim off Kailua Beach. For more information, contact Al Minn at 261-5143 or June Ford at 295-1272.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus stayed true to his career .333 average against Tom Glavine, going 1-for-3 against the Braves starter in his team's 6-2 loss yesterday. Atlanta manager Bobby Cox did not give Agbayani a chance to beat the former Cy Young Award winner in the eighth inning though, ordering Glavine to the showers in favor of Jose Cabrera with a pair of runners on and none out.

Agbayani singled to right off for the first hit in his career against Cabrera -- he was 0 for 3 against him previously -- to keep New York's rally alive and allow the Mets to tie it at two. Mets manager Bobby Valentine then lifted Agbayani for pinch-runner Desi Relaford before Lenny Harris grounded into a rally-killing double play.

Jay Spurgeon, Orioles: The former University of Hawaii pitcher is still waiting for his first work of the season after being called up Sunday. He did not pitch in his team's 5-0 win over the Blue Jays. Spurgeon watched Orioles starter Sidney Ponson spin a two-hitter.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School alumnus is on the disabled list and is eligible to come off Thursday.
