Helios test flight gets go-ahead from NASA

BARKING SANDS, Kauai >> NASA senior officials yesterday approved the first test flight of the Helios solar-powered flying wing from the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range on Kauai. NASA project manager John Hicks said the countdown for Helios' first flight will begin Monday with the flight scheduled for next Friday.

Helios will not attempt to reach its design altitude of 100,000 feet on its first flight. But NASA officials said it could top the record 80,000 feet set by NASA's previous solar airplane, Pathfinder Plus, flying over Kauai in 1998. The flights will be open to the public.

Free lecture to discuss isle weather phenomena

Glenn James, Pacific Disaster Center meteorologist on Maui, will discuss weather phenomena affecting the islands in a free public lecture at 7 p.m. July 10 at the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, 726 Kihei Rd.

James produces and hosts "Maui Weather Today" and provides a daily narrative on island weather conditions at hawaiiweathertoday.com.

Free sunglasses promote eye safety for children

Free sunglasses will be given to the first 500 children entering Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park on Sunday in a campaign by the EyeSight Hawaii laser eye center to promote children's eye safety.

Dr. John Olkowski, corneal surgeon and medical director at the center, said accidental injury is the major danger to eyes for young adults. He said about 100,000 sports-related eye injuries occur every year, with about one-third happening to children under age 16.

More information about children's eye safety may be obtained at the adventure park on Sunday or by calling EyeSight Hawaii, 735-1935.

Alleged Army deserter linked to thefts and drugs

Art An alleged U.S. Army deserter is being linked to thefts in Waikiki and drugs at Schofield barracks, according to Honolulu police and military investigators. HPD is asking the public's help in locating Joshua Miller, 21, who allegedly deserted on March 21.

Police said Miller was last seen May 18 at the Hawaiian King Condominium at 417 Nohonani St. in Waikiki.

Miller is described as 5-foot-8, 140 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, a nose ring, a ring on his left nipple and a tattoo of ancient Egyptian-style eyes on his left wrist.

Miller's vehicle is described as a 1993 maroon Buick, license plate number GNS 518. Police said Miller may have a military identification card that states his rank of private 1st class.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.

Man allegedly sets fire to carpet during argument

Honolulu police have arrested a 22-year-old man who allegedly set his carpet on fire during an argument with his girlfriend. Police said that on Tuesday the suspect assaulted the victim, burned the living room carpet, then threatened to blow up their Makiki apartment by igniting a propane stove.

The suspect was located and arrested yesterday for criminal property damage, terroristic threatening and abuse of a household member.

Burglar escapes after throwing CDs at victim

A burglar pelted an Aiea woman with her own music collection in his efforts to escape last night, according to Honolulu police. The victim was sleeping in her living room and said she awoke and saw the suspect crawling and going through her CDs.

Police said the victim started screaming and that the suspect then stood up, threw her CDs at her, then fled the apartment. Police later arrested the suspect for burglary but did not recover the victim's property, saying that they believed her jewelry and other items were in the suspect's apartment.

Robber uses scissors to threaten and rob victim

Police are looking for a man who threatened a 35-year-old man with a pair of scissors, forced him to withdraw money from automatic teller machines and then used the money to buy drugs.

Police said the robber asked the man Wednesday night for a ride to Kailua from Waikiki. When he got into the car, police said, he pulled out a pair of scissors, forced the driver to stop at three banks to withdraw money, then forced him to drive to a Pearl City address to buy drugs. Police said the robber took the car keys with him when he went to buy the drugs. The driver got out of the car and fled on foot. The robber also fled on foot. He is believed to be in his 20s, 5-foot-8, with a medium build and black hair. He was wearing a black shirt and shorts.

3 arrested in Kaaawa after man robbed in bar

Police arrested a 22-year-old man, an 18-year-old Makiki woman and a 22-year-old Liliha man on Wednesday for allegedly drugging a man in a Waikiki bar, taking his car and belongings and leaving him on Roundtop Drive. Police stopped the car with the three suspects in Kaaawa. In the car they found drugs, drug paraphernalia and items stolen from other cars. The three were arrested for kidnapping, auto theft and possession of stolen property, drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Big Isle man killed in car crash identified

KAILUA-KONA >> A man killed in a one-car accident on the Hawaii Belt Road at Honomalino, South Kona, early yesterday was identified as Jeffrey Mullineaux, 39, of Ocean View, police said. Police say speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident.

Police ask public's help in Kona computer thefts

KAILUA-KONA >> Kona police are seeking the public's help in solving two burglaries in which several computers were stolen from both Kona Krafts and Konawaena High School in Kealakekua. The computers, along with monitors and printers, were stolen sometime between June 8 and 10.

Police valued the computers stolen from Kona Krafts at $7,000 and those stolen from the school at $6,795. Anyone with information is asked to call police or CrimeStoppers.
