Family of dead teen sues driver in April 12 crash
The family of one of three youths killed in a car crash April 12 on Kaukonahua Road above Waialua is suing the driver, the sole survivor of the crash.Jeremy Juan Tolentino and two other classmates were riding in a car driven by classmate Brian J.K. Dade when Dade lost control of the car, which struck a guardrail and was broadsided by another car headed in the opposite direction.
Tolentino died the following day of injuries sustained in the crash.
Two others, Andrew Delos Reyes and Anthony Alexander, were also killed.
A couple and their daughter in the other car survived.
The suit, filed yesterday in Circuit Court by parents Juan and Cynthia Lynn Tolentino, alleges negligence by Dade and other unnamed parties including those who entrusted him with the car or furnished him alcohol.
Cost for mailing some items going up on July 1
Send your postcards now; they will cost you 21 cents starting July 1, or one cent more apiece.It is the first increase in that rate since 1995.
The cost of mailing heavier letters, such as wedding invitations, has also increased. Additional ounces will cost 23 cents each starting July 1, up from 21 cents.
So that means a 2-ounce letter would go to 57 cents from 55 cents.
Rates for business mail, advertising mail, periodicals and packages have also changed. Cost of mailing a letter or a monthly bill payment will still be 34 cents.
Charts reflecting the modified rates are available in post offices and online at the U.S. Postal Service Web site, www.usps.com.

Workshops to discuss federal disability policy
Federal disability policy will be discussed at a free presentation at 10 a.m. July 11 at the state Capitol auditorium.Paul Marchand, the Arc of the United States' assistant executive director for policy and advocacy, will discuss Bush administrative policies and regulatory issues, legislative issues and trends in the Supreme Court.
On July 16 there will be two identical workshops on "Accessible Web Sites for Persons with Disabilities." Doug Wakefield of the U.S. Access Board will lead both sessions, providing basic information for program managers, administrators and consumers.
The 90-minute sessions will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the third-floor conference room of the Kalanimoku Building at 1151 Punchbowl St. Cost is $10 per session. Deadline to register is July 2.

Man drives car into Ala Wai Canal this morning
A 23-year-old Kaneohe Marine was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol this morning after he drove a new pick up truck into the Ala Wai Canal.Firefighters took about three hours to remove the vehicle from the water after police called them for assistance at 3:25 this morning. Firefighters also dove into the canal to check the vehicle for other passengers. There were none.
Naked moped driver arrested on Kalakaua
Police arrested a naked man who was riding a moped through Waikiki early yesterday. The 18-year-old visitor from California was stopped on Kalakaua Avenue about 1 a.m. for driving under the influence of alcohol and open lewdness.
Two men arrested for assault on homeless man
Two men from Canada were arrested Tuesday night for allegedly beating a homeless man with a beer bottle.Police said the two visitors, ages 30 and 31, beat the man, 40, after he went to the aid of two women the visitors were harassing on Kalia Road about 9:30 p.m.
Police said after the victim fell to the ground, the two men slammed his head into the pavement and sidewalk. He suffered contusions and was taken to Queen's Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
Police arrest suspect in travel fraud case
Honolulu white-collar crime investigators have arrested an unidentified male suspect who may have been involved in selling fake tour packages.Police said the suspect, who was arrested for theft and money laundering, sold package trips to China in which no arrangements were made.
Police said the scam took place from May to September of 1998 and involved 10 victims.
To date, police said, none of the victims have gotten their money back.

Food worker arrested
A 47-year-old Restaurant Row dishwasher was arrested yesterday after he allegedly pointed a handmade gun at officers at the main police station on Beretania Street.Police said the man was being processed after his arrest for threatening co-workers at Ruth's Chris Steak House yesterday morning. Police said as they were searching him, a metal object fell from his pants, he grabbed it and pointed it at several officers who subdued him. Police did a test on the weapon and found that it was operational.
Motorcycle officer stable after crash last night
A 50-year-old Honolulu Police solo bike officer is in fair condition at Queen's Medical Center after his motorcycle collided with a car on Dillingham Boulevard last night.Police said the officer was traveling west on Dillingham on DUI patrol at 10:43 p.m. when a car pulled out of the driveway fronting Zippy's Restaurant at 1210 Dillingham Blvd. and struck him.
The driver of the car, a 23-year-old Waimanalo woman, was not injured.

Big Isle accident lands boy and man in hospital
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii >> Seven family members were injured when a van collided with a tractor-trailer truck in Waikoloa yesterday, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.Police said a boy and a 72-year-old man were in critical condition.
All were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, some in the county medical helicopter, the fire department said.
No names were released.
Police said the victims' ages ranged from 3 to 72. The accident was reported at 1:17 p.m. at Waikoloa Road and Paniolo Avenue, the fire department said.
Police said the accident was caused by the van failing to yield the right of way.
