Gonzales finishes
perimeter challenge

Twenty-two hours after she began, Kahuku High School biology teacher Iris Gonzales finished the Red Raider Island Challenge.

In an effort to raise money for a new biotechnology class she is teaching this fall at Kahuku, Gonzales completed the 134-mile paddleboard, bike and run around the perimeter of Oahu. She began the challenge Monday at 6 a.m. and finished yesterday at 4 a.m.

Gonzales is unsure at this time the exact amount of money and other donations received, but said she is extremely thankful to all who supported the Red Raider cause.

"Everyone (her students and supporters) was pretty much up for 24 hours," Gonzales said. "It was kind of an overwhelming response; it was island-wide. I'm going to try and return each and every one of the phone calls I received."

Rothwell defends title in Kalakaua Cup Regatta

Skipper Mike Rothwell, representing the Waikiki Yacht Club, will defend his Kalakaua Cup title, a three-race sailing regatta that begins Saturday.

Rothwell will team with David McFaull, who won the silver medal in the Tornado Class at the 1976 Olympic Games, in the J-35 Ho'okipa.

The event consists of a race from Waikiki to Kaneohe Bay on Saturday, an Olympic triangle course off Kaneohe Bay on Sunday, and a race from Kaneohe Bay back to Waikiki on July 4.

Movers lose in ninth against Kyushu All-Stars

The Kyushi Big Six All-Stars scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Hawaii Island Movers, 4-3, in an exhibition baseball game Saturday at Fukuoka, Japan.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to rain. The Movers will next play the Hiroshima Big Six All-Stars.

Naeole reworks contract for Saints

NEW ORLEANS >> Guard Chris Naeole has agreed to a restructured two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints in a deal that will help the club sign four rookies.

Jim Steiner, Naeole's agent, said the second year of the deal can be voided and Naeole likely will use the option and become a free agent.

The Saints were about $20,000 under the NFL's $67.4 million salary cap. The restructuring of Naeole's contract provides an extra $500,000 in cap money, which the Saints will put toward signing four rookies, including No. 1 pick Deuce McAllister.

Naeole declined a Saints offer last month that would have given him a four-year extension, with an average of less than $2 million a year.

Naeole was a standout at Kahuku High School and was the Saints' top pick and 10th overall in the 1997 NFL draft. He signed a five-year deal in 1997 that was worth nearly $8 million.

Poor graduation rates could cost postseason

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus was 1-for-4 in New York's 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Agbayani's lone hit came in the seventh inning. With the game tied at 1, Agbayani singled to center off starter Jon Lieber, but was stranded at first. He struck out swinging in the ninth against Cubs closer Tom Gordon.

In National League All-Star voting through Monday, Agbayani is 14th among outfielders, with 115,584 votes. San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds leads the league's outfielders with 1,201,468 votes.

Jay Spurgeon, Orioles: The former University of Hawaii pitcher did not pitch in Baltimore's 3-1 loss to Toronto. Spurgeon was recently recalled from Triple-A Rochester, but has not appeared in a game for the Orioles yet.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School alumnus was put on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 20, on Sunday because of a cervical spasm in his neck.
