Restaurant Report

Claiming a slice of culinary history will cost you $125.

That buys you grazing rights to foods prepared by all 12 of the original Hawaii Regional Cuisine chefs, plus an equal number of the next-generation all stars, the Hawaiian Island Chefs.

The two groups are cooking together for the first time at an Aug. 25 gala marking the 10th anniversary of the Hawaii Regional Cuisine movement.

A press conference Friday marked the official announcement of the event. Gov. Ben Cayetano said he has proclaimed August Hawaii Regional Cuisine month in recognition of how that one group of chefs had transformed the fine-dining scene, bringing international acclaim to Hawaii's restaurant industry.

"As I travel, people know about the chefs in Hawaii," Cayetano said. "They know them by name and by restaurant."

The anniversary event will be an all-day affair, starting with an HRC Waikiki Farmer's Market Festival, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Partnerships between chefs and farmers were key to the HRC movement.

The HRC Gala Dinner is set for 6 to 10 p.m. at the Sheraton Waikiki. Corporate tables of 10 will sell for $1,250, $5,000 and $10,000 (top-level tables include a champagne reception with the chefs and other extras). Individual tickets are $125, with a $50 discount for those who charge on American Express. Call 922-0588.

Beach BBQ

Summer is prime grilling season and beach season, so a barbecue on the sand is a natural. But if the thought of hauling all that charcoal and raw meat to the beach is daunting, the Plumeria Beach Cafe is offering to do it for you.

The cafe at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental is hosting a Grill Fest, Monday through July 4.

Forget hamburgers and teri-beef, the menu here includes Poha-Marinated Ribs and Lamb Chops Wrapped in Parma Ham with Grilled Tako and Maui Onions. The Catch of the Day is grilled in a banana leaf with Thai spices and clams.

The food is served buffet-style in the open-air restaurant from 5:30 to 9:30 nightly. Cost is $38.75 ($19.50 for children). Call 739-8760.
