Big Island antiquities dealer emptied out the drawers of his private collection of snapshots, post cards and publicity flyers featuring either group of the title, and assembled a charming visual retrospective of the well-known but overlooked genre.

The time period runs from 1870 to 1940, so that the modern world, epitomized by the chaotic industrialization of World War II, plays no part in this, and the Hawaii represented is quaint and cute and largely sepia-toned.

Unlike other Schiffer books aimed primarily at collectors and dealers, this one is more leisurely and reflective, and the captions just identify the image without dealing in nonsense specifics like auction prices. The layout and reproduction is also well-handled. Nice book.
