Art
KHET/PBS
'Ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, front, performed with
fellow Colón group member Guy Cruz at Border's in May.
Shimabukuro will be one of the musicians featured in "The
Art of Solo 'Ukulele," 7:30 p.m. today on KHET/PBS
(repeats 11 p.m. Sunday). Part of the "Na Mele:
Traditions in Hawaiian Song" series.

Pianists break loose

If one performer is a soloist and two is a duet, three is trio, etc., etc. -- then what's it called when 28 young pianists take the stage at one time?

"Pianomania."

More than 360 pianists ages 4 to 18 will take part in the July 8 keyboard extravaganza, performing in groups of as many as 28 on 14 pianos.

Their repertoire will range from Yanni and Henry Mancini to Scott Joplin and Pachelbel.

The Hawaii Music Teachers Association is sponsoring the concert to develop musicianship and character among their students, as well as teamwork, the piano being a solitary instrument, normally.

The concert will be held at 1 and 4:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Theatre. Tickets are $7, available at the box office. Call 528-0506.

Sporting summer for kids

Kids will get a chance to play with top athletes thanks to Honolulu Club's Kids' Sports Camp.

The camp, for 7- to 15-year-olds, is designed to help kids stay fit this summer.

The camp starts Saturday, running 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Aug. 11. The full session is $160. (Save $20 on the full session by registering by the end of day tomorrow.)

The program is also offered in two shorter, four-week sessions, at $90 per session. These run Saturday through July 14, or July 21 through Aug. 11.

Activities through July 14 are inline skating, racquetball, firefighter training tour and safety course, fencing, basketball, martial arts, swimming and water safety.

Activities from the 21st are golf, hiking, tennis, wallyball (volleyball on a racquetball court) and boogie-boarding.

Sessions will be held at 932 Ward Ave. Call 543-3900.

The Murphys are coming

They're from Boston, they're Irish (well, except for the lead singer, who's Scottish, but close enough) and they're punk. Tickets go on sale Saturday for the Dropkick Murphys, in concert July 21 at World Cafe on North Nimitz Highway.

The 5-year-old band comprises working-class lads who started out playing in the basement of a friend's barbershop, wanting to smash together punk rock, Irish folk and hardcore into "one loud, raucous, chaotic and often out-of-tune mix that we could call our own." There's a mandolin and tin whistle player in the band and even a guy who plays bagpipes with the moniker "Spicey McHaggis."

Local bands Buckshot Shorty and the ever-present Sticklers will open for the Murphys. Tickets are $16.50 (plus applicable service charge) and available at Tower Records in Kahala and Pearl Kai, Tower Video Kapiolani, Jelly's at Puck's Alley and Pearl Kai, Hungry Ear Kailua, Schofield ITR, Pearl Harbor Bloch Arena, ITT Kaneohe MCBH, Foodland/Sack n' Save, House of Music, Tempo Music and the UH Campus Center, or charge by phone at 526-4400.
