Honolulu set to get ArenaFootball2 team

Pro football may be returning to Hawaii as soon as next year.

Arena Football League officials are expected to announce Friday that Honolulu has been awarded one of 14 new expansion franchises in the fledgling ArenaFootball2 league. The unnamed team is scheduled to begin play in March, possibly at Blaisdell Arena.

The two-year-old league operates in 28 cities. The move to expand has surprised some, noting the drop in attendance from an average of 7,000 last season to 5,000 this year.

Hawaii's own

Benny Agbayani, Mets: For the second straight day, the St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific alumnus was involved in the winning rally for New York. Agbayani drove in two runs in an eighth-inning rally on Sunday and had another important hit yesterday in New York's 2-1 win over Montreal.

Agbayani singled off Masato Yoshii in the seventh inning of a 1-1 game to advance Joe McEwing to third base. McEwing scored when the next batter, Daryl Hamilton, singled to right.

Agbayani was eventually stranded at third base. He was 1-for-4 in the game.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani School graduate and Los Angeles had the day off.
