Cruising on the 4th

Maui's 4th of July fireworks can be viewed by land, and now, by sea aboard one of Pacific Whale Foundation's power catamarans: the brand new double-deck Ocean Odyssey out of Maalaea Harbor; the double-deck Ocean Spirit, also out of Maalaea

Harbor; the eco-friendly power catamaran Ocean Explorer out of Lahaina, or the sailing catamaran Manute'a out of Lahaina.

Cruises run from 7 to 9:15 p.m. and guests start out choosing from a selection of hot and cold pupu, followed by live entertainament.

The cost of the cruise is $45 per person. The rate for children (to age 12) is $22.50. Kama'aina receive a 20 percent discount on all prices.

Best of all, 100 percent of the profits go toward protecting Maui's reefs, dolphins and whales, through the foundation's research, education and conservation programs.

To reserve your seats, or for additional information, call 879-8811 on Maui. From the neighbor islands or mainland, call 1-(800)-942-5311.

Also on the 4th

Summer Music Festival 2001 takes place 3 to 10 p.m. July 4 at Maui's Lahaina Civic Center & Amphitheater off Honoapiilani Highway.

Gates open at 2 p.m. for an afternoon of music and merriment, with games for the kids. The event will open with a 2:45 p.m. blessing and hula performance by Mapuana and Ho'omana. The line-up of Maui's top musical performers includes Henry Allen, the Bobby Ingram Band, Crazy Fingers, the Mike Carroll Blues Band, Marty Dread & The Waena Boyz, Hector Serrano & Friends, and Roscoe Wright Jazz Band featuring Kelly Covington.

A 9:30 p.m. jam session will feature all the musical groups, and there will also be a fire-magic show with Ken Serrano.

Of course it wouldn't be the 4th of July without a fireworks display. Parking is available on-site.

Tickets are $10 through July 2; after that, they will sell for $12. Tickets can be purchased at: Borders Books & Music in Maui Marketplace, Kahului; Tropical Disc in Piilani Village Center, Kihei, and Groove 2 Music in Lahaina Cannery Mall, Lahaina.

Summer Music Festival 2001 is part of the AECG Music for Youth benefit concert series. Funds from this event will be allocated to purchase musical instruments for the annual Music and Performing Arts Camp programs.
