Star-Bulletin staff

The Honolulu Police Department is recruiting officers. Applicants must apply by Friday to be eligible for the next written test on Aug. 4.

Student officers earn $2,573 a month plus benefits. After 18 months, they are eligible for promotion to Metropolitan Police Officer with a salary of $2,807 per month plus uniform and weapon allowances and benefits.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent resident aliens. They must be at least 20 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, have a valid driver's license and be eligible to carry firearms.

Background checks, psychological screenings and medical and polygraph exams will follow for those who pass the written test. Successful recruits will undergo 6 1/2months of training anticipated to begin on Feb. 14.

As of May 31, there were about 2,000 sworn officers and 41 vacancies. But Capt. Dave Kajihiro of the Human Resources Division said: "We could recruit over 100, 150 recruits. We're looking for as many qualified applicants as we can find."

Applications and information are available at all police stations, Satellite City Halls, the city Human Resources Department and the HPD Web site at honolulupd.org.

Call HPD Human Resources at 529-3171 for information.
