CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY if you are on the mailing list of Honolulu Printmakers. You ought to be receiving a handsome postcard announcing the printmakers' newest exhibit, opening Tuesday at the Academy Art Center. Quality postcards
showcase art in
printmakers exhibitAs the printmakers have consistently put on quality exhibits over the years, so have they produced equally fine postcards that feature the artwork in the exhibits.
The graphic quality of the print medium lends itself to good reproductions, and these postcards represent art in miniature to be treasured.
The latest postcard features a lino cut by Anne Irons, who wanted to give her print a sense of humor while staying true to the exhibit's theme, "Through the Window."
Her print, titled "Cozy and Safe," depicts a cozy room, with a comfy upholstered chair, lamp and a dresser. But in the reflection of a mirror, a man is sneaking in through the window.
Iron is one of 13 Honolulu printmakers who are taking part in an exchange of prints with 15 printmakers from Austin, Texas. The participating artists each must come up with a print and then make enough multiples to give to every artist. In the end, each artist ends up with a complete set of prints.
All the prints will be shown at the Academy Art Center, and some artists also have made extra prints for sale. The show opens with a reception 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and runs through July 19. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Cost is free. Call 536-5507 for more information.
Digital artist Charles Hansen is seeking new artists who work in progressive and cutting-edge styles and media for his new gallery, @the UnDergROUND. Call him at 595-6377, 348-0591. The inaugural show, an exhibit by the Digital Art Society of Hawaii, opens Wednesday with a reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The gallery is in the basement at 91 S. King St., and the show runs through July 20. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment.
After all the smoke at the beach, potters finally get to show off the results of their hard work from Raku Ho'olaule'a (see a few works in "Gallery") in an exhibit at The ARTS at Marks Garage. The show runs through June 28. Call 596-3368.
