1969: Honeymoon on
Kauai, alone or with
your friends!

THE WEEK THAT WAS

AN ad for the Kauai Surf reads, "Romance is a honeymoon at the Kauai Surf Hotel." A special three-night package there including wedding breakfast is priced at $125. The ad added, "And that's for single, double or triple." Honest. (June 20, 1969) ... You don't expect to see a minister in a tavern, but it seemed as natural as could be the other night when the minister was the Rev. Abraham Akaka, the tavern was the Territorial Tavern, and he was there to hear and appreciate the Hawaiian music put out by Keola and Kapono Beamer. (June 19, 1974) ...

A third baby sea lion was born yesterday at Sea Life Park, and the facility's G.M., Greg Gillette, denies it was a publicity stunt to tie in with 45,000 visiting Lions. Incidentally, the lone male sea lion at Sea Life Park, Nalu, is probably the happiest sea lion in captivity. He has some 20 female sea lions at his disposal -- three have given birth, and several more appear to be pregnant ... The Office Wag says the reason King Carl Gustav of Sweden and his bride canceled their Kenyan safari honeymoon in favor of a trip to Hawaii was because he heard there were more Lions in Honolulu this week than in Africa. (June 22, 1976) ...

NOW that Elizabeth Lindsey has been crowned Miss Hawaii, someone has come out with a genealogical sheet showing her roots back to Kamehameha and beyond to Kaulahea, the Moi of Maui. The sheet claims she's a second cousin, 10 times removed, of the Hawaiian monarch, so the crown should fit her well. (June 19, 1978) ... Despite the fact he's still maneuvering on crutches, Frank De Lima made a spectacular entrance at his Shell concert, flying in (aided by a rope) as "Pochoman," smashing through a mockup phone booth a la Superman. (June 18, 1979) ...

BISHOP Museum's Dave Huffman was looking forward to the reception that Wimberly, Whisenand, Allison, Tong & Goo was holding for the international participants of PATA's tourism conference, so he showed up promptly at 5:30 p.m. Monday to meet representatives from the likes of Macau, Haiti, Indonesia, Zambia, Manila and South Africa. One problem: Huffman was exactly one week early. (June 18, 1982) ... There was a horse named Peace Academy running at a race track in Baltimore Wednesday, and retiring West Virginia Sen. Jennings Randolph won $900 by betting on him. Hawaii's Sen. Spark Matsunaga proposed a bill calling for a Peace Academy which passed Wednesday, about three hours after the horse by the same name came in. Randolph, who first broached the idea of a Peace Academy way back in 1945, was practically forced to place a bet on the 10-1 shot, but you can bet he's now glad he did. (June 22, 1984) ...

WHAT do you have when you see a photo showing the Dillingham Transportation Building on the left, the Amfac Building on the right and mountains in the background? You have a photo that's been reversed, that's what. Such a photo (from the Hawaii Visitors Bureau, yet) appears in a special Hawaii advertising section of Time magazine, complete with writing in reverse on the side of a tour bus and vehicles traveling on the English side of the road. (June 19, 1986) ... When artist Tom Rixford married wife Dee many years ago, Honolulu Ford exec Bill Bohan was the best man. They were great friends, of course, and some time after Tom died five years ago, Bohan and Dee began dating. Now it's come full circle -- her parents flew in to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, and the decision was made to make it a double celebration. Bohan and Dee were married the same day. (June 19, 1989) ...
