Marvin Quijano, Cobi Jones and Sasha Victorine also scored for Los Angeles (6-4-3), which moved to within three points of division leading San Jose.
Kansas City (5-6-1) lost its second consecutive match, allowing a total of nine goals.
"We're making a variety of mistakes," Kansas City coach Bob Gansler said. "We defend collectively and you've got to get your angles right. We're overthinking right now, rather than going out and acting."
Ching, who replaced Jones in the first half, scored on a 6-yarder in the 73rd minute, giving Los Angeles a 3-0 lead. He then assisted on Victorine's score, a shot from 15 yards out, in the 87th minute.
United 2, MetroStars 1: At Washington, substitute Abdul Thompson Conteh scored the winning goal on a breakaway in the 78th minute to end D.C's team-high five-game losing streak.
