A proposal to create a state paddling championship was among the 14 approved by members of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association yesterday.

The proposals were passed during the final session of the association's conference on the Big Island.

The HIADA recommendations will be presented to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board later this month for final approval.

The paddling proposal passed by a vote of 54-7 in the general assembly. Should it gain final approval, tentative dates for the championship regatta hosted by the Oahu Interscholastic Association are either Feb. 22-23 or 29-30, 2002.

A proposal to use a handicapping system to determine individual qualifiers for the state golf championships generated the most debate and was passed by a 34-33 vote.

HIADA awards:

The association honored several members at its banquet Friday night.

Waimea's James Kitamura and Pearl City's Roy Ichinose received the National Federation of High School Associations Years of Service award. The HIADA Outstanding Coaches awards went to Pearl City girls soccer coach Archie Chung, and Ed Kawachika, who spent 40 years coaching the swimming teams at Hilo and Waiakea. The HIADA Outstanding Service awards went to McKinley's Neal Takamori and Konawaena's Lyle Crozier.

Special service awards were presented to soccer statistician Chester Chee and Star-Bulletin sports editor Cindy Luis.
