Punahou deals
with exodus

By Jason Kaneshiro
Star-Bulletin

The athletic season may be over, but Punahou athletic director Tom Holden is busier than ever.

Holden is trying to fill vacancies left by the departure of three varsity coaches at the end of their seasons. Alan Lum and Shelley Fey recently decided to step down as head coaches for the boys and girls basketball teams, respectively, and Steven Link resigned as the girls track and field coach shortly after the state championships last month.

"We've had some tremendous coaches leave us and we're really feeling the void," Holden said. "But there's also some very talented people who have been applying."

Holden said the school may announce the hiring of its new boys basketball coach as early as next week, and is accepting applications for the girls basketball position through June 15. The girls track and field job will be opened to applications later this month.

Holden has already filled several holes in the school's coaching roster already this year. Lyman Lacro replaces Scott Rigg as boys volleyball coach, while John McDermott takes over for Diana McKibbin as girls volleyball coach next season. Both Lacro and McDermott were Buffanblu assistant coaches last fall.

Former Punahou and University of Hawaii player Rick Tune steps down as head volleyball coach at St. Louis to lead the Punahou boys junior varsity team next season.

Mike Georgi will take the reins of the boys cross country team from Ralph Dykes next fall.

Clayton Mew takes over as bowling coach, and Maile Kapuniai will lead the varsity cheerleading team after guiding the JV to the ILH championship last season.

De La Salle coach on Maui for Hall induction

De La Salle (Calif.) High School head football coach Bob Ladouceur will come to Hawaii this summer, but he won't bring his team with him.

Ladouceur will be inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame on July 1 on Maui. The ceremony will cap the National Federation of State High School Association's 82nd Summer Meetings, which open June 27 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort.

In Ladouceur's 20 seasons at De La Salle, the Spartans have posted a record of 248-14-1 and boast a 113-game winning streak. They were declared the national champion by USA Today in 1994 and '98.

Calls for a matchup between De La Salle and local power St. Louis in recent years have gone unanswered, as the schools have not been able to agree on the logistics of such a game. But Ladouceur's visit to the Islands may renew the push for a showdown between the California and Hawaii powers.

Joining Ladouceur in this year's Hall of Fame class are former NFL star Keith Jackson and Wilbur Crisp, who introduced electronic timing to high school basketball and wrestling. Other honorees are Rich Jordan, Tina Haave, Charles Adams, Barbara Twardus, Al Flischel, Colin Kapitan and Charles Ruter.

Kauai setter signs with William Woods University

Kauai High School graduate Heather Roberts has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.

Roberts, a 5-foot-8 setter, helped lead the Red Raiders to the Kauai Interscholastic Federation Championship last fall.

HHSAA coaches clinics set for this month

Chevron and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association will host two seminars this month for coaches of both school and club sports teams.

The seminars will be held June 22 and 23 at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel and will be conducted by certified instructors with the National Federation of State High School Association Coaches Education Program.

The Coaching Principles Course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 22. The Sports First Aid Course will be held June 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Coaches who pass a course exam will receive a diploma certifying completion of the course and will be entered into the National Coaches Registry.

The deadline to register is June 14.
