Among yesterday's qualifiers was 11-year-old Michelle Wie, the winner of the recent Jennie K. Invitational, and Christian Akau from Kamehameha Schools.
Akau shot a 74 and Wie shot a 76 yesterday.
Randy Shibuya opens his defense in a first-round match against Nate Powell. The second round is scheduled for this afternoon.
Play continues with tomorrow's quarterfinals and Thursday's semifinals.
The 36-hole final is scheduled for Friday.
State champion Aiea honored at banquet
The Aiea High girls' basketball team, which won the recent state championship, will be honored at a banquet hosted by the Aiea Lions Club tomorrow.The banquet will be held at Pearl Country Club. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $8.50.
The guest speaker is KHON newscaster Joe Moore, an Aiea graduate.

Ex-Hawaii tackle Sims signs with Seahawks
KIRKLAND, Wash. >> While the Seattle Seahawks could not reach an agreement with Rice, the team did sign former University of Hawaii defensive tackle Doug Sims to a free-agent contract yesterday.The 6-foot-1, 350-pound Sims passed his physical over the weekend. Terms of the contract were not released.
"All you can ask for is a chance,'' Sims said.
