Teams of paddlers needed for Dragon Boat Festival

Teams of paddlers are being sought for the sixth annual AT&T Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival. This year's races are being held July 28 and 29 at Ala Moana Park.

Companies and clubs can participate by fielding teams of 18 paddlers. Dragon boats, paddles and steersmen are provided.

The entry fee is $425. Teams can compete in either the cup race division, for teams who want to go up against others in their own industry, or the single-elimination open race division.

The two-day festival also will include live entertainment, food booths and crafts.

Call Gifford Chang at 951-0350 or Del Wong at 531-3526 for information packets.

Governor, county leaders attend meeting in Japan

If the state seems devoid of politicians this week, there is a reason: Many of them are in Japan.

Gov. Ben Cayetano and first lady Vicky Cayetano are heading a delegation of Big Island Mayor Harry Kim, Maui Mayor James Apana and Kauai Mayor Maryanne Kusaka for the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau trip to Japan.

The delegation, along with local visitor industry leaders and Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris' representative Sharon Ishii, left Sunday and are expected back June 12.

Cayetano is expected to meet with the vice governors of Tokyo and Osaka while in Japan, according to his office.

On June 7, Cayetano and the Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus will visit the city of Uwajima to express their condolences to the families of the Ehime Maru crew and passengers.

Runway closures raise Leeward area noise

Runway closures at Honolulu Airport will mean more aircraft noise for residents of Ewa Beach, Makakilo, Kapolei and Iroquois Point later this week, according to the state Department of Transportation. Runway 4R/22L will be closed tomorrow and Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and from 3 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday for airfield lighting installation.

Telethon nets $700,000 for Kapiolani Medical

The Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network raised $705,241 at its 19th annual campaign to raise funds for children's medical care.

That tops last year's total of $615,965 raised for children at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, Hawaii's only children's specialty hospital.

The telethon was broadcast Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. on KITV-4. Donations continue through corporate participants' fund-raising efforts and pledges.

Public libraries to close for Kamehameha Day

All public libraries will be closed on Monday, King Kamehameha Day. All but five of the libraries will reopen next Tuesday. Libraries in Waialua, Kailua-Kona, Kihei, Lanai and Princeville, Kauai, will not reopen until June 13.

MAN WITH MACHETE SURRENDERS

GEORGE F. LEE / STAR-BULLETIN
A man with a machete who locked himself in a pickup surrendered to
police yesterday after a two-hour standoff at Alawiki Street in Ahiumanu.
Police said the male, 43, refused to come out of the truck after a Mililani
woman said he threatened her with the blade at Kualoa Park. Police said
he also had a gas can in the vehicle. SWAT officers ultimately shot him
with nonlethal beanbag rounds, and he was arrested on suspicion of
terroristic threatening but not immediately charged.
