Aloha plenty in Napili
and Orange County

CHECKING into the Mauian Hotel on Napili Beach for their 20th visit there were L.A. residents Howard Winfrey Wilson and wife Kim. Mauian G.M. Nane Aluli helped the couple celebrate "Windy's" 100th birthday at a poolside party. Windy has lived all his life in L.A. -- he was born there in 1901 -- and spent his life as an interior decorator including work at the Beverly Hills Hotel. As for Nane, she's now started preparing for another landmark birthday. Her mom, Irmgard Farden Aluli, will be celebrating her 90th in October ...

WHEN the original "Chaplain of Waikiki Beach," Bob Turnbull, entered John Wayne/Orange County Airport with wife Yvonne last Friday heading for a marriage conference in Seattle, they immediately noticed something quite different. The smell of flowers was in the air and the ticket agents behind all the airline counters were wearing flower lei. In the middle of the counters was Aloha Airlines, whose agents presented lei to workers with other airlines. Before boarding their flight, the Turnbulls recognized Aloha CEO Glenn Zander and asked what effect the promotion was having. Said Zander, "I see hundreds of serious faced passengers with their briefcases, laptops and business suits, stopping to see our dancers and singers, sample our Hawaiian food and get a Hawaiian lei placed on their necks, and when they depart, their demeanor changes. It never ceases to please me how our Aloha Spirit can transform anybody's face into a smile." ...

The Mighty Quinn

UNTIL he died this week at the age of 86, Anthony Quinn lived the life many people dream of. He made 100 movies, fathered kids well past the time most people stop and later in life painted. He visited Hawaii to promote his art works and on one occasion, after dining at Sarento with his second family, he learned that owner Aaron Placourakis was Greek and immediately got up and did a "Zorba the Greek" dance with Aaron ... I became friends with one of Quinn's daughters, Chelsea Rogers, whose grandfather was Cecil B. DeMille. My condolences on her loss ...

ACTRESS Sharon Stone was at the Four Seasons Hawaii last week and as a new hostess was escorting the sexy Stone to her beachside table, accidentally tripped her. Stone showed good "Basic Instinct" and landed hands first onto the soft sand, and laughed off the experience ...

Pounding eardrums

THEY thought getting front row seats for Saturday's Perry & Price Hanohano Room Saturday was a good deal. Right up until the duo brought out the Hawaii Matsuri Taiko, a drum group promoting the Pan Pacific Festival/Matsuri in Hawaii this week. Then the front row folks were covering their ears, though one diehard suggested it was a great way to wake up on a Saturday morning without caffeine ...
