UH raises $116 million
during 4-year fund drive

The record-setting donations include
$8 million from an anonymous couple

The University of Hawaii ended its four-year fund-raising drive last night, a month ahead of schedule, having topped its goal of $100 million by $16 million.

"Campaign for Hawaii" was the largest fund-raiser in the university's history.

It included the largest single gift ever given to the university from an individual. An anonymous couple's gift of $8 million was more than double the previous record of $3.4 million, school officials said.

The UH Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the university, now pulls in donations at the rate of $30 million a year, up from $10 million a year in the early to mid-1990s.

Private donations have helped offset steep cuts in state funding of the university in the past decade.

"The university's campaign has elevated the quality of the institution on all fronts," campaign co-chair Larry Johnson said.

"The ultimate beneficiaries are the students, families, communities and businesses that the university serves," he said. "We're in the midst of institutional renewal, and the campaign will provide the foundation for substantial growth and achievement in the years to come."
