Wahine sailors
in third

The University of Hawaii Wahine sailing team is in third place after the second day of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association North American Women's Championship at the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass.

The Wahine have earned 143 points in the A and B divisions. Dartmouth leads the competition with 138 points while St. Mary's is a close second at 139.

Senior skipper Molly O'Bryan and sophomore crew member Sarah Hitchcock lead the A division with 64 points. Freshman skipper Marin Diskant and junior crew member Melody Torres have earned 79 points, giving them fifth place in the B division.

In last year's competiton, the Wahine placed ninth.

Benny Agbayani, Mets: The St. Louis and Hawaii Pacific alumnus did not play in New York's 6-3 loss to Philadelphia.

Mike Fetters, Dodgers: The Iolani graduate helped turn back a Rockies rally as Los Angeles beat Colorado 4-1. Fetters relieved starter Chan Ho Park with two outs in the eighth and runners on first and second. He walked Jeff Cirillo before retiring Todd Walker on a fly to deep center to end the threat. Closer Jeff Shaw replaced Fetters to start the ninth and retired the Rockies in order.

Wahine water polo player an All-American

UH Wahine water polo player Christi Bardecki earned honorable mention status on the 2001 American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America team.

The senior driver from Toronto, Canada, led the team with 51 goals and 36 assists, helping the Wahine to a 25-10 record.

Jorris takes fifth place in Ironman Brazil

Heather Jorris of Honolulu placed fifth in the Ironman Brazil competition Saturday.

Jorris ran a 3 hour, 16 minute marathon to finish fifth after coming out of the 112-mile bike portion in 10th place.

The race also included a 2.5-mile swim.

Jorris' overall time was 9:52.01. She won $2,500 and qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona.

Wendy Ingraham won in 9:10.02.

Other Hawaii finishers were Lisa Nelson and David Casas.

Powerflifting contest on Maui honors ex-coach

The fourth annual Doc Yogi Maui Invitational Weightlifting Championships will be held on Aug. 11 at 3:30 p.m. at the Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului.

The meet is named after Masayoshi Nelson "Doc" Yogi, who coached and developed several state and national weightlifting champions, including two-time Olympian Vernon Patao.

Bikefactory racing series premieres this weekend

The new Bikefactory bicycle racing series will premiere Saturday at the Hawaii Motor Speedway in Kapolei.

The evening will also feature races from the winged sprint cars, super stocks, midgets, modifieds, mini-stocks and the cruzer bruzers.

The gates open at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for juniors 11-17, $3 for keikis 6-10. Kids 5 years old and under are free.
