Cultural riches
a lasting gift
of immigration

Four Hawaii students have been honored for their winning entries in the "Celebrate America" Creative Writing Contest sponsored for 5th graders by the American Immigration Law Foundation and the Hawaii Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association to spread a positive message abut the benefits of immigration to America. The winners are:

1st -- Amanda Tabata, Maryknoll

2nd -- Brian Saxton, Maryknoll

3rd (tie) -- Tyler Brown, St. Ann's School; and Nicole Ing, Hawaii Baptist Academy

The students won cash prices of $25 to $100; Tabata's piece was entered into the National Creative Writing Contest and placed as a runner-up. Here are the winning words:

BY AMANDA TABATA

I am proud to live in a place with many immigrants.

Many people get to share customs, traditions, history, language, and many more things.

Many people do not know how lucky they are to live in a place with many immigrants.

I can learn many things about a culture from one another.

Give thanks because you live in a wonderful diverse, and free country.

Really take the time to experience, and learn about all of the cultures, history, traditions, religions and many more things.

Always be proud of who you are, what culture you are, and where you come from.

Nurture and create an appreciation for all cultures.

Together we stand in a community of different cultures, so we are strong.

I am able to enjoy wonderful foods, music, dance, games, entertainment, and recreation.

Many people in America are not prejudice to one another because we have learned to get along.

Many cultural experiences I get to have because all of my friends are from different cultures.

I learn many things from them and they learn many things from me.

Great thoughts and ideas they can pass on or teach me, and I can do the same.

Racism is a very bad and cruel thing to do to other people from other cultures.

Amazing things I will be able to accomplish by learning things from immigrants.

Never should we judge other people by what they look like, but for who they are as a person.

To be friends with an immigrant is a great privilege because you will learn so much!

BY TYLER BROWN

An American Immigrant can truly be called,a lucky person by one and all.

They came from all over the world, old men and women, young boys and girls to find and live a better life,

Away from all the pain and strife, freedom they thought was a dream come true, with fair and unselfish kinds of rules

And my American family knows how lucky they are to be free.

BY NICOLE ING

Remember Before You Came

Trapped in an eerie cave,
Sent to a prison-like grave,
Because of your religion.
Silenced to death in a room,
Whipped with deadly gloom,
Because you spoke your thoughts.
Killed and pierced in the heart,
This terrible dying seemed to just start,
Because you spoke for freedom.
Then like the birds in the sky,
Seeing a freedom so high,
Because you entered the Land of Free Dreams.
